Can CBD help you quit smoking?

- Categories : Default

Recently, some of our customers have been letting us know that they’ve been using the premium CBD products we offer to help them quit smoking. In this blog, we wanted to explore the question: Does CBD help smokers quit their nicotine addiction?

Our initial search was promising; one study has found CBD reduced cigarette consumption by 40% amongst regular smokers when compared to a placebo group. We’ll share what we’ve learnt from research like this which indicates that smoking CBD can fight symptoms of withdrawal and also reduce cravings for a cigarette.

Smoking CBD is more than just an alternative for tobacco.

Increasingly, smoking cannabis or CBD (cannabis with low THC content) is being viewed as an alternative to smoking tobacco products. Big Tobacco have clearly identified this trend, with companies like British American Tobacco starting to put big money into the emerging legal cannabis industry link to article.

But what if a CBD pre-roll could be more than just another option for cigarette smokers…what if CBD could actually help cigarette smokers quit?

The problem with most existing smoking cessation techniques.

Most products offered today which aim to help you quit smoking all share the same fatal flaw: they contain nicotine. Using nicotine patches, gums and e-cigs does represent a reduction in risk compared to daily tobacco use, however it doesn’t address the root cause of tobacco abuse – nicotine addiction.

Nicotine is the psychoactive drug in tobacco which smokers get hooked on and, as long as they remain addicted to nicotine, a cigarette will always be tempting. This is why cessation techniques that use nicotine are often doomed to fail.

Can smoking CBD reduce nicotine addiction?

A study amongst regular smokers has found that CBD can help reduce the appeal of cigarette cues (images, smells etc), when compared to a placebo group. Researchers have hypothesised that this may be because CBD inhibits the production of the anandamide or the ‘bliss’ molecule produced when smoking tobacco. Essentially, what this means is CBD might reduce the chemical appeal of nicotine, cigarettes, and tobacco in general.

You can smoke CBD to fight the symptoms of withdrawal.

Headaches, insomnia, nausea, irritability, anxiety, mood swings: these are all the struggles the quitting smoker must endure to end such a bad habit. It’s no wonder people so often fail. What makes smoking CBD so appealing as a means to quitting smoking cigarettes is that its potential health benefits directly combat these symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

CBD works to restore balance in the body by enhancing the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which is responsible for homeostasis. Essentially, smoking CBD either with a hemp pre-roll or by vaping diminishes that sense of unease or irregularity in quitting smokers.  Research into the anxiolytic effects of cannabidiol (CBD) offer particular encouragement, with increased anxiety being one of the primary effects of tobacco/nicotine withdrawal.

CBD is non-intoxicating and non-addictive…and completely organic!

And don’t worry! Smokers wouldn’t just be swapping one addictive substance for another. CBD has been shown to be non-addictive in a peer-reviewed report published by the WHO in 2017. This is primarily because it is non-intoxicating ie any positive health effects it may have on the brain are not something we notice, and therefore there is no sensory experience associated with smoking CBD that we could get addicted to.

And, of course, smoking CBD is far healthier than smoking tobacco; CBD flower grown responsibly is totally organic and contains no carcinogens. All the CBD products you can find on CBDetc mirror our own passion for what’s natural and good for human health.
